How to tell if somatic therapy is right for you

By Nicole · 6 min read · July 2026

If you're considering a new therapy, you may have seen somatic therapy online and wondered what it involves, or whether it could help you. It's normal to have questions or uncertainty when exploring something new — the reflections below can help you decide if it's right for you.

What is somatic therapy, and how does it work?

Somatic therapy focuses on the interconnection between your body, behaviours, habits, health, and past experiences. It helps you notice how stress and trauma manifest physically, and supports your nervous system in finding balance, reducing stress, and transforming tension.

How does somatic therapy work in practice?

Somatic therapy is based on the idea that healing happens when you can tend to the patterns of your nervous system. It gently helps shift you out of stress responses like fight-or-flight, or the freeze and fawn responses.

In sessions, you're guided to slow down, notice your body, and try small exercises — learning about your nervous system, practising a sense of safety, and observing how you feel. Sometimes we might use gentle therapeutic touch.

A typical session starts with a brief check-in on how you're feeling emotionally and physically. From there, you connect to something supportive, and notice sensations like tension, warmth, or discomfort — you might observe your breath or try small movements to see their effect. For example, we might discuss a stressful event while noticing physical reactions, such as a tight chest or clenched jaw, and pause to explore those feelings with movement or grounding. Sessions end with time to reflect on what you noticed, and ways to support yourself until your next appointment.

Some other benefits of somatic therapy
  • Feeling more joy and ease in daily life
  • Better ability to manage emotions
  • Relief from physical symptoms linked to emotional stress
  • A stronger connection between your mind and body — which often extends into relationships, work, and daily life, allowing you to approach challenges with more resilience

Why I love somatic therapy

Somatic therapy is gentle and focused on your needs. It supports and empowers you to heal, helping you regain balance, confidence, and ease in a safe, supportive way.

I've seen somatic therapy change lives when other methods didn't work. Some clients with long-term tension and panic have discovered, through touch and awareness exercises, that their bodies held unprocessed emotions for years — deeply stored in implicit memory. People often say they feel lighter, safer, and more open. One client described being on a new "frequency" — breathing more easily and connecting with her body with gratitude and curiosity.

Give yourself a moment to reflect on what you've read, and look for a practitioner trained in a recognised, certified approach — Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Compassionate Inquiry, and Polyvagal-Informed Care (Deb Dana) are a few examples. Your healing journey is personal, so finding someone who feels right for you matters.

Reflections to help you decide

Somatic therapy addresses both mind and body, and how stress or trauma impacts them. If talk therapy alone hasn't helped, this approach adds nervous system healing for bigger change.

If you often experience tension, headaches, digestive issues, or other unexplained symptoms, these may signal emotional pain or survival stress. Somatic therapy can gently help your body reorganise and restore balance.

Somatic therapy helps you notice your nervous system and gently explore your body. If you're willing to learn from your body, and are open to trying a different perspective, this approach may suit you.

If other therapies haven't helped you progress, somatic therapy may reveal what's keeping you stuck. It goes beyond managing symptoms to support real healing and growth.

It's common to feel disconnected from your body after stress or trauma. Somatic therapy helps you reconnect to your body so you feel more grounded, safe, and present in your daily life.
